The Photographers Gallery in London History
perustettu 1971, the gallery is located in the heart of London’s West End, hidden down a back alley south of Oxford Street. It boasts seven galleries over three floors, a shop with prints and photography books, magazines, and camera equipment for purchase, and a superb café where the visitor can look over her purchases and absorb the exhibitions over a nice cup of tea. The gallery also has a membership plan and an extensive education program, with a range of talks and events open to the public. The registered charity’s funding comes from both the public and the private sector.
The Photographers’ Gallery is the first London gallery to hold exhibitions of major figures in international photography including documentary photographer Sebastiao Salgado (documentary), photojournalist Robert Capa, fashion photographer Jurgen Teller, and contemporary artist Andreas Gursky. These also features photographers based in the UK such as Zineb Sedira and Corinne Day. Every year the gallery hands out the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize, a major award in the field of contemporary photography.
